What is UK car hire excess insurance?

It is common practice, if you’re hiring a car in the UK, for car hire companies to include car insurance (often referred to as a collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss damage waiver (LDW)) as part of their hire policies. However, if you need to make a claim on the car hire insurance policy you will need to pay an excess charge often between £500 and £2000.  This excess fee can be avoided by taking out excess insurance also known as an excess waiver. You can buy this at the rental desk when it can cost as much as £25 extra per day, or you can buy with us for just £2 per day in the UK and Europe (price includes IPT).

This cover will act as a financial “buffer” in the event that you incur damage to your vehicle and have to make a claim. Please note that although excess insurance is by no means compulsory without this level of cover you will be liable to pay excess fees before any claim is settled which can be well into the thousands of pounds.
