What Is Annual Car Hire Excess Insurance?
Our UK & European car hire excess insurance covers you for driving in a hire car across Europe and the United Kingdom. With our UK & Europe annual car hire excess insurance policy you are covered for a year from your policy start date and will be covered for unlimited car rentals anywhere in the UK or Europe, so long as each rental is not more than 30 days. This covers you for excess fees due on your hire car should you damage it, plus additional cover listed in our policy documents.
Often these excess fees are poorly explained and result in a huge cost for you, the customer, when you believed that you were fully covered. Annual car excess insurance means that if you’re involved in an accident, theft or collision in a hire car anytime during the year your policy is valid. We pay the excess cost and any other costs outlined in the policy, saving you money.
Our annual excess insurance, as well as our single trip excess insurance, covers a wide range of issues that might occur during your car rental from accidents and damage to putting the wrong fuel in your hire car or losing the keys.
Stay protected by making sure you always have the car hire excess cover you need, whenever you’re on the road. With this kind of cover, you can make sure a small amount of money upfront covers you in case of damage to your hire car which could be considerably more.
Frequently Asked Questions: UK & Europe
When is it best to take out an annual excess policy?
While you can purchase an annual excess waiver insurance policy when you go to pick up your rental, you will always benefit from taking out an annual policy in advance. Doing your research means that you can understand exactly what the policy will cover, compare prices and companies while you are relaxed and have time to make the best decision for yourself – and your wallet. It’s always better to take a policy out in advance when you are not being pressurised by pushy sales tactics.
Why do I need hire car excess insurance?
When you turn up at the car hire rental company and expect to pick up your keys and hit the road, you’ll often be hit by a barrage of offers for products you’ve never heard of before. These products come at an additional cost, above and beyond the price of your hire car – and can include everything from personal injury cover to breakdown cover.
It’s important you do your research in advance, so that you can be protected while also saving yourself a great deal of money. The prices at the desk are always higher than if you had purchased in advance with carhireexcess.insure.
Even with these additional products sold at the car hire desk, it’s important to note that the customer is still liable for damage or theft of the hire car to a certain degree. The majority of insurance policies will expect the customer to meet an excess fee, which can fall anywhere from £500 to £2000 from one car hire desk to another.
carhireexcess.insure removes this excess charge without the need to pay excessive daily fees to the car hire company when you get to the desk. Buying an annual excess policy with us means you’ll be covered for an unlimited number of trips, so long as each car hire rental doesn’t last more than 30 days.
How does excess insurance work?
Let’s assume that in the terms and conditions of your insurance policy, your insurance provider states there is an excess fee of £500 before any claims are settled. Now let us assume all of the windows of your hired vehicle are broken. You make a claim and the total cost of repairs amounts to 1,200 pounds. Before the claim is settled by the insurance company you will need to pay the excess fee.
You make a claim and the total cost of repairs amounts to 1,200 pounds. Before the claim is settled by the insurance company you will need to pay the excess fee. In theory, you have paid £500 towards the damages (the excess fee) and your insurance company has covered the remaining £700.
There are many factors that will determine how large your excess fee is including type of vehicle, the age of the driver, how many years experience the driver has and whether they have any past insurance claims.
To make sure you don’t get stuck with that £500 bill, a car hire excess insurance policy will cover that excess fee in return for a daily payment of around £5 a day for as long as you are renting the vehicle.
This small daily payment will ensure that if you do have an accident or are the victim of a crime, and need to make a claim, you won’t have to pay anything, giving you peace of mind on your travels.
Europe is a driver’s dream. Coasting along the French Riviera or skirting through the Alps, there’s so much to explore. Take a look at our Europe Driving Guides for a low down on the laws, customs and other things to be aware of if you’re planning on driving in Europe.
Before you pick up your hire car, make sure you have bought your excess protection from us in advance which can save you money compared to the profile you will pay at the rental desk.
Be sure to carefully read our policy documents and key facts before you travel though, so you are clear on everything that is included in our policy and the limits and exclusions to be sure your cover is valid:
Car Hire Excess Around the World
Our UK and European insurance policy is perfect for family driving holidays or weekends away in the countryside in a hire car. If you are planning on making multiple trips to Europe this year or are planning on hiring a car for more than 17 days then our annual policy will work out cheaper for you.
If you are traveling to Australia, South Africa or somewhere else far flung then you’ll need our Worldwide excess insurance policy. If you are planning on hiring a car for three weeks or more then you should get our annual policy as it will work out cheaper than our 21 day daily policy.
Traveling to USA, Canada, Mexico or South America? Car hire insurance is slightly different in these places as it does not include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) in the policy, commonly included in the UK and Europe. Our policy has you covered with CDW included in our USA & Canada policies.
